Stari Grad Hvar on the map

Stari Grad (Hvar)

One of the Oldest Towns in Europe

Stari Grad (Old Town) is located on the north side of the island of Hvar, in a deep bay, inhabited from the 3rd century BC by Greeks. It is a real historical center of the island of Hvar, which proves even three historical collections: archaeological in the Dominican convent, maritime and hidroarqueological collection in palace Biankini. In Stari Grad there is one of the most significant examples of Renaissance architecture countryside of eastern Adriatic coast: Tvrdalj, established poet Peter Hektorovića mansion, built in the first half of the 16th century, with a tower and pond that is still in operation, and numerous inscriptions on the passing of Fortune and guidelines for the moral life. The mansion is located near the church of Sv. Deadline from 16 century and the Baroque parish church of Sv. Stephen from the turn of the 17th in 18 century.
